Neurofeedback is a therapeutic tool used to gain more control over the electrical activity in your brain. It is a safe and highly effective modality used to minimize symptoms associated with attention-deficit disorders, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, headaches and migraines, eating disorders, chronic pain, trauma, dissociative disorders, and many more.

Are there any negative effects from neurofeedback training?

Accepted Answer

There are no chemicals or magnetic energy inputs from Neurofeedback so side-effects are rare. You may experience short-lived negative effects after training, but these effects are mild and are usually gone the next day. The most common side effect is mental fatigue after a session because Neurofeedback is learning and learning uses a lot of energy. Other side effects such as dizziness are typically from medication but may be exacerbated by the improvements gained with neurofeedback. Usually, we can alter the training so that negative effects do not occur.

Does NFB replace counseling or medication?

No. Addressing symptoms of nearly all neurological conditions is multi- faceted, meaning there are many things that can be done to give the most positive outcome. For example, losing weight is multi-faceted because for best results you wouldn't go to the gym alone, instead adding a healthy diet, supplements, better sleep routine, and metabolic testing are ALL beneficial and will help you reach your desired goals faster and healthier (long lasting).

Neurofeedback is a facet for addressing neurological conditions as is counseling and medications. We encourage our patients to continue any treatments they find helpful! Neurofeedback is different from counseling or medication in the way it works but it can balance and improve brain function so you can engage in the counseling process more fully, allowing you feel healthier, more centered and to make more conscious, healthier decisions. With time and dedication, our clients could potentially decrease their medications or cease taking them all together.

What is neurofeedback therapy?

Neurofeedback is also known as EEG Biofeedback.  BrainCore Neurofeedback is guided exercise for the brain.  It is a learning modality designed to retrain dysregulated brainwave patterns.

What is a QEEG?

The QEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalogram) is commonly referred to as a 'brain map'. And electroencephalogram is a report of electrical activity within the brain that provides detailed information about brainwave activity and function.

How does the treatments work?

Sensors are attached to the specific training sites on the individual's scalp and then the computer records the brainwave activity.  These sensors are non-invasive as there is no electrical current being put into the brain.

What is the cost?

Most insurance companies do not cover neurofeedback, unfortunantly, but we are HSA/FHA approved and do accept all major credit cards.  We offer discounts on treatment packages, but all require a QEEG to determine the appropriate course of care.  The cost of the exam is $250 and includes the Report of Findings on a seperate visit.  At the second visit, fees for the recommended treatment will be discussed and the cost of the QEEG will be deducted from the price of the recommended package.

What should I expect during and after sessions?

Once the training protocal has been selected based on the findings of the QEEG, each visit will begin with a check up on how the client is feeling and tracking of recent symtoms. The neurofeedback training uses a state of the art computer based therapy system.  Sensors are placed on the scalp in key positions that are determined through analysis of a customized QEEG Brain Map.  The sensors are non-invasive and painless. The sensors simply receive the brainwaves emitted by the brain and carry them to the computer where they are amplified and recorded by the BrainCore software.

The BrainCore software automatically detects when the brainwaves are properly ordered and regulated. That information is fed back to the client in real time through a training media chosen by the client: a game, movie, or tv show. The neurofeedback program signals the client's brain when the brainwaves become dysregulated and unorganized, and once again when they normalize and become reorganized. This quite literally teaches and retrains the brain and creates new neural pathways.

After each session, some clients feel a bit tired and others feel a burst of energy.  Some may experience a slight headache from the hard exercise session they just experienced.  It usually dissipates very quickly.  Nearly all clients report that each neurofeedback session is very relaxing.

How many times a week should I come?

We recommend a minimum of 2 sessions per week for treatment packages.

Question 10

What can I do to enhance the results? What slows down progress?

Accepted Answer

We will review supplemental brain hacks that can enhance your results.  These include cold showers, early morning light exposure, sauna bathing, setting and sticking to a bed time routine, and supplements.

We highly recommend avoiding alcohol during your training package sessions. Progress will be slowed down by not eating healthy and nutritious meals, not moving your body enough, and placing yourself in stressful environments.

Does my neurofeedback technician offer counseling?

No, we are not licensed counselors. Neurofeedback training is a tool for you to improve your brain health.  We will monitor the symptoms and success of the training sessions, and will provide referral resources when asked or necessary.
