Neurofeedback For Trauma

A gentle, drug-free way to help your brain feel safe again.

If you’ve lived through trauma, you may already know that “just getting over it” isn’t how it works. Long after the event has passed, the body and brain can stay on high alert — bracing for danger that isn’t there. You might feel anxious or on edge much of the time, struggle to sleep, startle easily, or find your mind racing. Or you may feel the opposite: numb, disconnected, exhausted, or shut down. These aren’t character flaws or a lack of willpower. They’re signs of a nervous system that’s still stuck in survival mode

How trauma affects the brain

Trauma isn’t only a memory — it’s a physical imprint on the way your brain regulates itself. When something overwhelms us, the brain’s threat-detection system (centered on the amygdala) can become overactive, while the regions responsible for calm, perspective, and rational thinking become harder to access. The brain can get locked into patterns of hyperarousal (anxiety, hypervigilance, insomnia, irritability) or hypoarousal (numbness, fatigue, dissociation, feeling far away).

This is why so many trauma survivors say they know they’re safe but don’t feel safe. The reactions are happening underneath conscious control, in the brain’s automatic regulation — which is exactly where talk alone can struggle to reach.

Help For Victims of Trauma

How neurofeedback can help:

Neurofeedback works at the level of brain regulation itself. Using sensors that read your brainwave activity in real time, the system gently rewards calmer, more flexible, more organized patterns — essentially helping your brain practice shifting out of those stuck survival states and into balance. Over time, the brain learns to do this more easily on its own.

Because neurofeedback doesn’t require you to talk through or relive what happened, many people find it a gentler entry point than purely talk-based approaches — especially those who feel stuck in therapy, or who find revisiting the trauma re-triggering. The goal isn’t to erase your past. It’s to help your nervous system stop reacting as though the danger is still happening, so you can sleep more soundly, feel more present, and move through your days with more steadiness and calm.

A growing body of research into neurofeedback for trauma and PTSD is encouraging, and while it remains an evolving field, many of our clients describe meaningful relief: quieter minds, better sleep, fewer intrusive symptoms, and a renewed sense of feeling like themselves.

What to expect at BrainSpa:

Your journey begins with a QEEG brain map, which lets us see the specific patterns of dysregulation in your brain rather than guessing. From there, we design a personalized training program built around what your brain actually shows us. The sessions are non-invasive and painless — sensors simply read your brainwaves while you relax — and most clients find them genuinely calming.

A complement to your healing, not a replacement

We believe trauma deserves comprehensive care. Neurofeedback is a powerful tool, and it works best alongside the support of trauma-informed therapists and medical providers. We’re not a counseling practice, and we’ll never ask you to choose between approaches — in fact, many clients find that neurofeedback helps them engage more fully in their therapy, because a calmer, more regulated brain is better able to do the deeper work of healing. If you’re already working with a therapist, we’re glad to be part of your team.

You don’t have to stay stuck

Trauma can make it feel like this is just how things are now. It doesn’t have to be. If you’re ready to explore a natural, non-invasive path toward feeling safe and steady again, we’d be honored to help.

So what's next?

Your journey starts with a QEEG brain map, which shows us how your brain is actually regulating itself rather than leaving us to guess. From there, we design a personalized training program using established neurofeedback protocols, delivered through sensors that simply read your brainwaves while you relax and watch TV. The sessions are non-invasive, painless, and most clients find the process genuinely enjoyable and relaxing. Since the brain learns through repetition, consistency matters, and we'll talk through a realistic schedule that fits your family's life.

A complement to your care — including medication:

Neurofeedback isn't an either/or. It works well alongside behavioral strategies, school support, coaching, and medication. We'd never ask you to choose, and any decisions about medication should always be made with your prescribing physician. Many families find that a calmer, more regulated brain helps every other piece of their plan work better. If your child is already getting support at school or from a provider, we're glad to be one more member of the team.

A clearer, calmer path forward:

Mental health concerns don't have to mean a lifetime of friction and falling short of your potential. If you're ready to explore a natural, non-invasive way to help your brain — or your child's — focus and settle, we'd love to help you take the first step.
